OpenBrewComp Demo Awards

The following explains the basic assumptions used in the OpenBrewComp Demo competition.

Individual Awards

Individual medals will be awarded to the first, second, and third place winner of each category. The judges have sole responsibility for determining if all of the medals in a particular category should be awarded, or if there are ties for a particular medal.

First Time Entrant Award

The First Time Entrant Award is open to all new entrants to the competition. This award is offered as an encouragement to new brewers to “get their feet wet” in competition and get feedback on their brewing efforts.

The BJCP category and subcategory must be designated for proper judging. Medals will be awarded but this category does not count towards brewer or club points and does not qualify for Best-of-Show (therefore only two bottles are required).

Best of Show

Best of Show will be awarded from the judging of all first place entries in the standard BJCP categories. First place entries in the Imperial Beer and First-Time Entrant categories are excluded.

Heavy Hitter Award

The Heavy Hitter Award is given to the individual brewer who accumulates the most points at the competition. Points are awarded as follows:

First Place in each category 3 points
Second Place in each category 2 points
Third Place in each category 1 point

No points are awarded from the Imperial Beer and First-Time Entrant categories.

If your competition has a similar award, but uses a different point scale, you will need to modify app/controllers/admin/results_controller.rb to change the point calculations.

Competition Trophy

The Competition Trophy is awarded to the club that garners the most points, based on the same scale as the Heavy Hitter Award.

MCAB Qualifying Styles

The competition may be defined as a qualifying event (QE) for the Masters Championship of Amateur Brewing (MCAB). If so, the top-ranked beer in each MCAB qualifying style (QS) would be invited to compete in the championship finals.

Designation as a MCAB QE enables some additional functionality in the Best-of-Show flights and results pages that does not apply to non-MCAB QEs.

In the event that any of the standard BJCP categories are split into multiple award categories, this would cause some of the MCAB QSs to be split as well. In such an instance, the MCAB qualifier would be the winner as chosen by the Best-of-Show panel for the corresponding grouping of first place medalists (the MCAB qualifier for the American Ale category, for example, would be determined by the BOS panel from the three BOS finalists of the American Pale Ale, American Amber Ale, and American Brown Ale if the American Ale category were split into three separate award categories).

The Best-of-Show flight sheet would include a column in which to denote the MCAB QE for the relevant categories.

For the BJCP categories that are not split amongst multiple award categories, the MCAB qualifier would be the beer that wins first place in the category.
